Among the people arrested in Minnesota in this weekend's heavy-handed (and that's about as polite as I can put it) police suppression of the first amendment is Amy Goodman. Alternet story is here. Glenn Greenwald's account is here.
That's always been the trouble - many (if not most) police think they're there to serve wealthy individuals and corporations; so few have enough sense to know their duties. I guess after being called up so many times to act as the public-funded private armies guarding such events as the WTO meetings, they get the impression that their masters are large corporations and politicians. So much for protecting civilians and upholding justice and the law. They've still got the slogan "To Serve and Protect" - but you've got to wonder who they serve and protect.
